Pangeran Diponegoro (Yogyakarta, November 11st 1785 - Makassar, January 8th, 1855) is one of the national heroes of the Republic of Indonesia. His tomb is located in Makassar.
Diponegoro was the eldest son Hamengkubuwana II, a king of Mataram in Yogyakarta. Diponegoro mother is R.A. Mangkarawati, namely a garwa ampeyan (wife nonpermaisuri) derived from Pacitan. Pangeran Diponegoro real name Raden Mas Ontowiryo.
War of Diponegoro began when the Dutch put stakes in the ground in the village owned Diponegoro Tegalrejo. At that time, he was already fed up with the behavior of the Dutch who do not respect the local customs and so exploit the people with taxation.
Diponegoro attitude which openly oppose the Dutch, the sympathy and support of the people. On the advice of Prince Mangkubumi, uncle, Diponegoro away from Tegalrejo, and made headquarters in a cave called Goa Selarong. At that time, stated that the opposition is Diponegoro sabil war, resistance facing the infidels. The spirit of "war sabil" Diponegoro who waged an impact to the wider region and Kedu Pacitan. One of the religious leaders in Surakarta, Kyai Maja, joined forces with Diponegoro in Goa Selarong.
During this war the Dutch loss of no less than 15,000 soldiers and 20 million guilders.
Various ways continued effort to catch Diponegoro Netherlands. Even contest was dipergunaan. Gulden 50,000 prize awarded to anyone who can catch Diponegoro. Until finally Diponegoro was arrested in 1830
